Titans news: Casey Powell interviewed by 1080 the Team

This afternoon, Casey Powell, star midfielder for the Orlando Titans lacrosse team, was interviewed by Jerry O’Neill and Brian Fritz of WHOO-AM ESPN 1080 the Team.

O’Neill made a big deal in the lead-up about how big Casey Powell and his brothers are right now in lacrosse.

Some highlights: He wore the most important number at Syracuse University, #44, and his two younger brothers, Ryan and Mike, also wore it at Syracuse. People in the lacrosse community consider them as having “changed the face of lacrosse” today. A lot of Powell’s appearance was about learning about the sport of lacrosse and the NLL, and emphasizing that the Titans are not an expansion team but a relocating team that already has a playoff pedigree.

Indoor or “box” lacrosse is played with five field players and a goalkeeper, kinda like ice hockey. It is more run-and-gun than full-field outdoor lacrosse. (Now that’s saying something, since I’ve watched a lot of field lacrosse myself.) A lot of the rules are similar to ice hockey, complete with penalties and even fighting. From how Casey described it, if you liked the Solar Bears or Seals, you’ll love the Titans. The NLL is entering its 26th season.

The pro sport is more a weekend sport, and many players have real jobs as well as being lacrosse players. Casey himself is a lacrosse trainer, and has experience on the U.S. national team. There are A-division and B-division national teams, with a total of 20 countries plus the Iroquois Indian nation having teams.

The Orlando Titans will begin formal preseason training tomorrow, December 5, at Barber Park. The public is welcome to come watch for free. The season begins January 8 at home against Philadelphia, and games will be aired by 1080 the Team.

BTW: The beginning of home ticket sales has been re-scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, December 5, at 10:00am on Ticketmaster. Single-game tickets are $20-35, all lower bowl. Season tickets are $99-250 for eight home teams.

********

You’ll notice a name that belongs there, that isn’t there. Mike Tuck, Jerry’s partner-in-crime on the station’s afternoon sports talk show, was off, and will be getting married tomorrow. Congratulations to Mike and good luck for his new life together with his wife-to-be.

Thanks for the coverage. Indoor lacrosse is a blast to watch, we already have our season tickets!! Casey is a phenomenal player and ambassador for the game, but he wears #22 (now and at Syracuse), it’s always the first number picked on a youth lacrosse team!!

22 was worn at Syracuse by Charlie Lockwood, Gary Gait and then each of the Powell brothers. Thanks again for the coverage, if you’ve never seen the indoor game it’s well worth the ticket!
